Musicians turn out in force for grand opening of Something Guitar in Watford

Crowds of music enthusiasts and aspiring rock stars have gathered at the opening of a new store keen to support local talent.

A cerise ribbon, cut by Mayor Dorothy Thornhill signified the opening of Something Guitar, in the North Approach, Watford, on Saturday morning.

Visitors were snapping up bargains, drinking champagne and eating nibbles, while Watford-based singer Roberto Cappellina, from band Go Monaco, sang an acoustic set.

Shop owner Alan Johnson, 33, said: “We stock a range of acoustic and electric guitars, and we’re one of the only stockists in the area of Yamaha guitars.

“I’ve worked in the music industry for over 20 years, writing music for adverts and television, so have a lot of experience and feel I’m in a good position to give advice about instruments and the industry.

“Roberto [Cappellina] is doing a great job with his acoustic set today, and I’d definitely consider opening an area of the shop in the future for singers to come in and perform.

“There is a lot of talent in Watford which sometimes gets overlooked for London, but I’m keen to support Hertfordshire bands as much as possible, in fact, since December, I’ve been sponsoring Watford acoustic night The Song Closet.”

Mayor Dorothy Thornhill, who was happily chatting to would-be musicians, said: “I think this is more than just a great new shop in the area.

“It’s putting something back into the community and supporting our local music scene.”

Among the 50 guests at the store opening was organiser of The Song Closet, held at Que Pasa in Watford, Jo Stevens.

Ms Stevens who also performs at the monthly evening, said: “I am so pleased that so many people have turned out today to support Alan [Johnson].

“He has been a fantastic support to our evening and I hope that aspiring musicians will take the time to visit his warm and welcoming store.

“With his wealth of experience in the industry, he really is well placed to give great advice.”

Gifts for Teenage Boys
Tuesday, 18 August 2009 10:44

I had a mum call me last week with a request for a present for a teenage boy who has it all. She had a budget of £200 max and was looking for a Music orientated gift with a difference. She did not want to buy another Guitar or amp so I asked about how he goes about practicing, she told me he drives the household crazy by playing along to Guns and Roses and The Beatles tracks. The problem was that his playing was not good enough to keep up with the tempos of the tracks he wanted to play. I suggested the Tascam MP-GT1 portable MP3 Guitar Trainer and explained that amongst other features you can loop and slow down sections of MP3 and practice along at your prefered speed of playing BUT keeping the key the same - sale closed. I followed up on the sale with a call to a very happy Mum her son loved the MP-GT1 and is now playing along at his chosen tempo and starting to speed up - fantastic.
